Exploring Mushroom Dyes

Mushroom dyes offer far more possibilities than a simple pot of color. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore the breadth of what can be created with dye mushrooms, experimenting across a variety of fibers, fabrics, and techniques.

We’ll begin with the fundamentals of extracting lasting color from mushrooms, then move beyond the traditional dye bath to see how those colors behave on wool, silk, and plant-based fabrics. Together, we’ll experiment with mordants and modifiers, explore mordant printing to create pattern, and use mushroom dyes in eco printing and other surface-design techniques.

Throughout the day, we’ll work in a sampler format, creating a collection of dyed and printed samples that demonstrate different approaches to working with mushroom color. Along the way, we’ll discuss which mushrooms to look for, how to prepare and store your finds, and how to choose techniques based on the mushroom, fiber, and color you hope to achieve.

Designed as an introduction to the possibilities of mushroom dyes, this workshop will give you a foundation for experimenting with your own finds just in time for summer mushroom season.

Included: All supplies.

Skill Level: Beginner. No previous dyeing experience required.

Our facilities include an air-conditioned classroom, a bathroom, and abundant outdoor workspaces. Please dress comfortably for a day of standing, sitting, and brief walking. This class will take place indoors.

If you need to withdraw from a workshop, a refund will be issued, minus transaction fees, provided that notice is given at least 4 weeks before the workshop date. If shorter notice is given, we will issue a refund if we can fill your spot. You may transfer your enrollment to a friend at any time.
