Discover the beautiful colors hidden in the ground beneath your feet and the transformative power of fire. In this workshop, we’ll use locally collected Tennessee soils to create richly pigmented, lightfast paints. You’ll learn how to levigate raw earth into fine, high-quality pigments, explore the chemistry of burning ochres to reveal new hues, and craft your own artist’s charcoal from foraged plants.
We’ll use these local soils to add accents to handmade ceramic paint wells, then pit-fire them to create lasting color. Participants will take home three full pans of watercolor paints made from Tennessee soils and one charcoal paint created from foraged plants, all stored in their pit-fired ceramic paint stones.
All materials are provided. This class includes a blend of indoor studio time and outdoor activities around the fire.
Coffee, tea, and treats will be served.
