Indigo
This workshop is for those interested in growing their own indigo but unsure how to get the homegrown color onto textiles. We will go beyond simple fresh-leaf indigo dye methods and learn how to extract indigo pigment for long-term storage and for use in building dye vats.
What We'll Cover:
- The essentials of growing and harvesting indigo in a Southeastern garden.
- How to extract indigo pigment for vat use from freshly harvested leaves.
- How to dry your leaves and set up a vat with dried leaves.
This workshop primarily consists of demonstrations and is designed to help you gain confidence in working with your own plants. We will walk through all the steps together, from fresh plants to finished textiles. We will be making small vats that reflect the amount of indigo most people can harvest from a home garden.
Our facilities include an air-conditioned classroom, a bathroom, and abundant outdoor workspaces. Please dress comfortably for both indoor and outdoor climates, as well as an afternoon of standing, sitting, and brief walking.
Drinks and snacks will be served.
