Indigo

Feeling blue? We’ve got just the solution—indigo! In this workshop, we’ll explore the magic of indigo in three forms: a fructose vat, an iron vat, and freshly picked, farm-grown indigo.

What We'll Do:

  • We’ll begin with a walk through the garden to observe the varieties of indigo we grow and discuss how to incorporate them into your own garden.

  • We’ll cover the basics of vat maintenance for those interested in starting their own, and compare the strengths of each dyeing method as we create a fabric sampler.

  • You’ll also learn a variety of resist techniques to produce beautiful, one-of-a-kind patterns.

  • Participants are welcome to bring additional items to dye — fabric yardage for sewing, yarn for fiber projects, or household textiles ready for a refresh. We’ll prioritize workshop materials first and dye as many personal items as time and materials allow, so flexibility is appreciated.

Registration includes a half-yard of fabric for your sampler and a small silk item of your choice to dye with fresh-leaf indigo. Your finished pieces will be perfect for small sewing projects, and I’ll share inspiring ideas for using them. Additional dyeable materials will be available for purchase.

Our facilities include an air-conditioned classroom, a bathroom, and abundant outdoor workspaces. Please dress comfortably for both indoor and outdoor climates, as well as an afternoon of standing, sitting, and brief walking.

Coffee, tea, and treats will be served.
