Natural Dyes 101

Learn the foundations of natural dyeing from start to finish. This beginner-friendly workshop is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to begin working with natural dyes at home.

We’ll explore the complete dyeing process, including choosing and preparing fibers, scouring, mordanting, creating botanical dye baths, dyeing with plants and other natural materials, using modifiers to shift color, and working with indigo.

Along the way, we’ll talk about how different fibers respond to natural dyes, how to create lasting color, and how to troubleshoot common dyeing challenges.

Throughout the day, you’ll work with both plant- and animal-based fibers and create a collection of naturally dyed samples to take home. Your samples will become a useful color and process reference as you continue exploring natural dyes on your own.

This is the perfect place to start if you’re new to natural dyeing or want a better understanding of the processes behind the colors.

Included: All fibers, natural dye materials, mordants, modifiers, indigo, and supplies needed for the workshop.

Skill Level: Beginner. No previous dyeing experience required.

Our facilities include an air-conditioned classroom, a bathroom, and abundant outdoor workspaces. Please dress comfortably for a day of standing, sitting, and brief walking. This class will take place indoors.

Coffee, tea, & treats will be served.
