Printing with Natural Dyes
Explore the art of creating pattern and color through mordant printing. In this two-day workshop, we'll use mordants and natural dyes to create printed designs on cloth, learning how different mordants can transform a single dye bath into multiple colors.
On the first day, we'll prepare printing pastes and explore different ways to apply mordants to fabric. You'll spend the day developing your own patterns and printing textiles by hand using blocks, stamps, brushes, and other tools.
On the second day, we'll develop our printed fabrics in natural dye baths and watch the patterns and colors emerge.
Choose from a selection of bandanas, napkins, and fabric yardage to create your own collection of naturally printed textiles. You're also welcome to bring additional natural-fiber items from home to print and dye. The amount you complete will depend on the complexity of your designs and how many pieces you have time to print during the workshop.
Included: Your choice of bandanas, napkins, and fabric yardage, plus all natural dyes, mordants, printing pastes, and supplies needed for the workshop.
Skill Level: Beginner-friendly. No previous printing or natural dyeing experience required.
Our facilities include an air-conditioned classroom, a bathroom, and abundant outdoor workspaces. Please dress comfortably for a day of standing, sitting, and brief walking. This class will take place both indoors and outdoors.
Coffee, tea, & treats will be served.
